Women in Medicine: May Edward Chin (1896 - 1980)

May Edward Chin was a 20th Century physician from the United States who was the first African-American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College and the first African-American female intern at Harlem Hospital!

After years of studying music in college and preforming classic music at concerts, May received discrimination from a professor for the color of her skin. May decided to change her major to science, and then went on to study medicine!  May was an advocate for early cancer screening, and provided healthcare to patients that otherwise would not have received any by means of her private practice.
